In many cases using electronic navigational aids means substituting human observations and calculations with automatically generated output and representation. This is done as a combination of sensor input, display data representation and man - machine - interaction.
Depending on the circumstances and task at hand, this iterative process can be counted in seconds, minutes or even hours starting with an acquisition of data and ending in navigator action in response to the new data. Operating in blue waters far away from a coastline naturally puts other demands on the navigator than it does operating at high speeds in littoral waters where the safety margins are extremely low.
We refer to this processing time as the Navigation Process Latency.
